Why Great Guana Cay is the perfect destination for your vacation

Great Guana Cay is a long, narrow island where days are planned around the beach and the boat. The settlement is small and traffic is almost nonexistent, and that simplicity is the appeal.

Aerial view of Love Beach and the reef on the Atlantic side of Great Guana Cay, Abaco
  1. Five and a half miles of Atlantic beach

The ocean side of the cay is one long stretch of white sand. Outside of Sunday afternoons near Nipper’s, you can usually walk a long way without meeting anyone, and guests at Love Beach reach it by a private staircase from the backyard.

Reef runs close to shore along parts of the beach, so on calm days you can snorkel straight from the sand.

  2. Two coasts with two kinds of water

The Atlantic side has the surf and the reef. The Sea of Abaco side is calm and protected, and it gets the best sunsets on the island, especially around Fisher’s Bay.

The cay is narrow enough that you can switch sides in a few minutes by golf cart, depending on the wind and your plans for the day.

  3. Island life at golf cart speed

There are no traffic lights and no large resorts on the public part of the island. People get around by golf cart, the settlement has a small grocery store, and dinner usually means a beach bar or a meal cooked at home.

  4. A base for exploring the Abacos by boat

Great Guana Cay sits in the middle of the Abaco cays, so Man-O-War Cay and Hope Town on Elbow Cay make easy day trips by boat in good weather. If you arrive on your own boat, Orchid Bay Marina near the settlement is a full-service marina with slips for large yachts.

Where to stay on Great Guana Cay

The island is small, but where you stay changes your days. Some homes sit right on the Atlantic beach, others face the calm Sea of Abaco. This is how our homes compare.

  1. On the Atlantic beach: Love Beach and Kalopsia Villa 5

Love Beach is a Bali-style beachfront home for up to 10 guests, with a main house, four private cabanas, a private pool and stairs down to the sand. Nipper’s and Grabbers are a short golf cart ride away.

Kalopsia Villa 5 is a four-bedroom oceanfront villa for 8 with beach access and a shared pool. It welcomes pets, which makes it a good fit for families who travel with their dog.

  2. On the south point: Sand so Sea

Sand so Sea sits on a bluff at the southern end of the island, looking over the cut between Great Guana Cay and Scotland Cay toward the Atlantic and the Sea of Abaco. Each of its three bedrooms has its own bathroom and entrance, a layout that works well for couples traveling together.

  3. On the Sea of Abaco side: One Love Apartment

One Love Apartment is a one-bedroom for two in the One Love estate in Ocean Ridge, with views over the Sea of Abaco. Guests arriving by boat can use the 40-foot dock for an additional fee, and pets are welcome by arrangement.

Local tips from our team

  • Book your golf cart as soon as your dates are set. Supply on the island is limited in peak season.
  • Ferry schedules change with the season, so confirm your crossing time before you book flights. We can help with the timing.
  • The settlement grocery store is small. Ask us about grocery delivery or plan a first shop in Marsh Harbour before the crossing.
  • Sunday is the liveliest day on the island because of Nipper’s. Pick another day if you want a quiet beach.
  • The north end of the island is the private Baker’s Bay club, open only to members and their guests.
  • Pack water shoes. Parts of the ocean side have rocky ironshore entries.

What to know before your trip to Great Guana Cay

  • Getting to Great Guana Cay

Fly into Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (MHH) in Marsh Harbour. Nonstop flights arrive from Florida and from US hubs such as Atlanta and Charlotte, with schedules that vary by season. For private or semi-private options, see our charter flights to The Bahamas.

From Marsh Harbour, scheduled ferries make the crossing in about 30 minutes, and tickets for scheduled runs are sold at the dock. If your flight lands late or you’d rather not wait, we can help arrange a private water taxi through our Bahamas transportation partners.

Arriving by boat? Most visitors tie up at Orchid Bay Marina or pick up a mooring in Settlement Harbour.

  • Getting around Great Guana Cay: transportation options

Golf carts are how everyone gets around, so rent one for your whole stay and reserve it early in peak season. Bikes work well for short trips around the settlement.

To visit other cays, rent a boat for the day or take the ferry back through Marsh Harbour.

  • Currency and payment options

The Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, and US dollars are accepted across the island. Most restaurants and bars take cards, but carry some cash for small purchases and tips.

Banking services are in Marsh Harbour, so it’s easiest to get cash there before the crossing.

  • Essentials to pack for your Bahamas vacation

Pack light clothing and reef-safe sunscreen for long days on the water, plus water shoes for rocky entries. A dry bag helps on boat days, and if you own a snorkel mask that fits well, bring it.

Bring any prescriptions you need for the whole trip, since services on a small cay are limited.

  • Best time to visit Great Guana Cay

December through April brings the most settled weather and calm seas for boating. It’s also the busiest season, so book homes and golf carts early.

May and early summer are warm, with good water conditions and more availability. Hurricane season runs June through November and is most active in late summer and early fall, so consider travel insurance in case of inclement weather.

The best days here are simple: time on the water, then a good place to watch the sun go down.

  • Nipper's Beach Bar & Grill deck above the Atlantic beach on Great Guana Cay BEACH BAR

    Spend a Sunday at Nipper’s

Nipper’s Beach Bar & Grill sits on a bluff above the Atlantic beach, with two pools and a multi-level deck. Its Sunday pig roast has drawn boaters from around the Abacos for years. Arrive early if you want a table with a view.

  • Sunset over the docks on the Sea of Abaco side of Great Guana Cay SUNSET

Watch the sunset from Grabbers on Fisher’s Bay

On the Sea of Abaco side, Grabbers looks west over Fisher’s Bay, which makes it the island’s favorite sunset spot. Order a Guana Grabber, the house frozen drink, and stay until the sky changes color.

  • snorkel in abaco SNORKEL

Snorkel the reef off the Atlantic beach

Coral heads sit a short swim from shore along parts of the beach, and on calm days you can reach them with your own mask and fins. Check the wind first, because the Atlantic side gets rough quickly. For deeper reefs and dive sites, we can help connect you with local dive and snorkel operators.

  • Red-and-white striped Hope Town lighthouse on Elbow Cay, Abaco BOAT TRIP

Take a boat to Man-O-War Cay and Hope Town

Rent a boat or book a captain for a day on the Sea of Abaco. Man-O-War Cay is known for its boatbuilding heritage, and Hope Town on Elbow Cay has the red-and-white striped lighthouse and a harbour lined with colorful cottages. We can help arrange a boat rental or a captained day on the water.

  • Golf cart on a quiet road on Great Guana Cay, Abaco GOLF CART

Explore the settlement by golf cart

Take a slow loop through the settlement on Settlement Harbour, where clapboard houses painted in bright colors reflect the island’s Loyalist roots. Stop at the public dock, pick up supplies at the grocery store, then head back to the ocean side for a swim.
